Who We Are
At Meals On Wheels Atlanta, our mission is to support senior independence through meals, shelter, education, and community. We hope our story inspires you to get involved and bring an end to senior hunger in Atlanta!
Meals On Wheels Atlanta (MOWA) was founded in 1965 to support seniors struggling with poverty, food insecurity, and social isolation. Over more than 50 years, we have grown from a small soup kitchen to an organization serving more than 514,000 meals each year throughout the Atlanta area. We have also expanded our program offerings to respond to other critical needs in our community. We now offer multiple services to support both older adults and veterans, including home-delivered and congregate meals, home repair services, and a food pantry for both seniors and their pets.
Our vision is to ensure that no Atlanta area senior is hungry, cold, or forgotten.
What We Do
Our programs are a vital intervention for Atlanta’s senior population, offering the support and care our clients need to extend their independence with dignity. Our current program areas are as follows:
Meal Services: Our Meal Services program is working to end senior hunger in Atlanta, providing home-delivered meals, congregate meals, shelf-stable food packages, supplemental nutrition, and pet food so that our clients do not have to share their own food with pet companions. Relying on a dedicated corps of volunteers, the program’s flagship home-delivered meal service provides nutritious meals to low-income seniors age 60+ in central Fulton County. This service is 97% funded by private donations. In 2019, we served a total of 514,765 meals to seniors in need across the Atlanta area.
Home Repair Services: Through our Home Repair Services program, we work to ensure that the homes of the seniors and veterans we serve are safe, warm, dry, and accessible. Our skilled technicians and contractors complete repair and maintenance tasks on both the interior and exterior of homes, with the goal of enabling the homeowners to maintain their independence and continue living at home. Last year, our Home Repair Services program completed repairs for a total of 372 seniors’ homes throughout metro Atlanta.
