Volunteer: Dekalb County Book BuddiesAre you seeking a volunteer opportunity in Dekalb County that provides a direct impact on student literacy? Do you have 2 thirty minute intervals per week to help an elementary school child in Dekalb County Public Schools improve their reading? Become a Book Buddy! Book Buddies is a virtual reading program that was developed in response to the pandemic to continue to support literacy development in elementary aged students. Students read online twice per week with a virtual volunteer as well as independently throughout the week. Reading hours are tracked and students receive incentives based on the number of hours they have read. Because we are working with young children, each volunteer must undergo a background check. Book Buddies runs Monday – Thursday from 4-7. Volunteers are asked to sign up for a minimum of two sessions so they can be paired with the same student for both sessions each week to increase the chances of a successful mentoring match.
WHAT YOU DO Register as a volunteer below Attend 2 virtual trainings Appear in person in Dekalb County to complete a fingerprint background check Sign up for a minimum of 2 weekly 30 minute sessions Assist your reader during your session (help with words, discuss the book, etc)
BENEFITS OF BEING A BUDDY Bragging rights as your student becomes a better reader An opportunity to work on the frontlines to improve student literacy An opportunity to have a direct impact on an elementary aged student The opportunity to be a role model and help a student learn to love readingGOALS OF BOOK BUDDIES To ensure every student in our program reads on or above grade level To provide students with a volunteer mentor, to be a positive role model in the student’s life To increase/instill a love for reading in all Book Buddies familiesADDITIONAL DETAILS: This is a completely virtual opportunity for an individual seeking to positively impact literacy in elementary aged students. However, there is an in person fingerprint background check required by Dekalb County Public Schools to work with their students. Opportunities also available for volunteers willing to read aloud to Kindergarten students.
