Volunteer: Refugee Youth Mentor

Be an Ally to Refugee Youth

The Refugee Youth Mentoring Program pairs each volunteer with a refugee child age 9-17 in a one-year, one-on-one mentoring relationship. Mentors and mentees meet weekly at the child's home (typically in or near Clarkston) or in Atlanta (virtual or hybrid options available). Mentees and Mentors spend time together trying new things and fun activities such as hiking at Stone Mountain, attending sporting events, visiting the aquarium or museums, etc., and the occasional homework help. Mentors must be 21+ years old Willing to complete a formal application packet Background checks (~$51 fingerprint fee, limited financial assistance available) Willing to complete training (8 hours) Meet agency auto insurance requirements as applicable (if transporting clients) Willing to meet with mentee weekly for 1 hour per week OR 4 hours per month for one year, typically in or near Clarkston, GA Virtual or Hybrid options are available

Volunteer: Adult ESL Class - Help Adults Learn English (Lilburn)

Make a big impact in someone's life! Help adults learn to speak English!

We are recruiting volunteers with a college degree and excellent English language skills to teach English. Volunteers teach to a group of adult students.

Morning classes are held twice a week: Tuesdays & Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Evening classes are held twice a week: Tuesdays & Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Classes take place in Lilburn. Classes are in person.

The ideal commitment we seek from volunteers is to teach in a classroom ONCE A WEEK (morning or evening) for an entire SEMESTER (approximately 5 months). Volunteers can teach up to twice a week at one location.

Volunteers should have: a professional demeanor, confidence in speaking/teaching to a group, an openness and appreciation for those from other cultures, ability to lead a class, and be highly dependable. Computer literacy is preferred.

Prior to starting, volunteers attend a virtual orientation and trainings. Training includes learning the curriculum. Volunteers will also shadow classes before being assigned their own class.

Volunteers must attend quarterly meetings to review updated materials and/or changes to the program.

Help kids navigate the American school system and rise to their potential by dedicating just two hours of your time each week!

Catholic Charities Atlanta’s Virtual After School Program is for 2nd and 3rd graders who attend Indian Creek Elementary school in Clarkston, GA. The 30 students are recently arrived refugees from Congo, Syria, Burma, Afghanistan, Somalia, and many more countries! Students are identified by the school as needing additional educational support. The After School Program is every Monday through Thursday during the school year from 2:15 PM to 4:30 PM.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Establishing positive and appropriate relationships with the refugee children, volunteers and staff in the After School Program, including curriculum building and lesson plan facilitation.

COMMITMENT: At least one day per week: a "day" being Monday through Thursday from 2:15 PM to 4:30 PM.

TRAINING:

Volunteers must participate in the following trainings:

1.5 Hour CCA Agency Orientation 3-hour Behavior Management Training . 3-hour in-person Safe Environment for kids(VIRTUS) Training. This program incorporates best practice standards for the prevention of child sexual abuse. On-site fingerprinting at the Office of Public Safety (school district requirement)


QUALIFICATIONS:

Interested parties must be 18 years of age, otherwise will need parental consent to volunteer Respect and empathy for students in a multi-cultural classroom Love and passion for working with youth Sensitivity to vulnerable populations Openness to feedback provided by peers and supervisor(s) Willingness to complete agency application process, which includes a background and reference check and agency volunteer orientation, in person- Office of Public Safety fingerprinting (school district requirement), as well as an additional trainings referenced above.
