Description

Create a fun activity kit to keep children learning & engaged! Children at PADV are currently out of school, and in a safe place. Make a positive impact on your community today by getting creative and providing a fun and educational activity! By signing up for this activity, you are committing to creating a minimum of 1 activity kit, but you are welcome to make more.

INSTRUCTIONS

Choose a book as a theme. Select an age-appropriate book, and find a new or gently used copy. Read it a few times to get comfortable with your theme! The children will have just read the story before completing your activity.

Determine an activity. Keep the theme of the activity around the book’s characters, story and setting. Get creative - think about easy crafts! Some fun activities are:

Paper plate masks: Children make a mask out of paper plates, popsicle sticks, and construction paper cut-outs of a character from the book.
Write a sequel: Children author & illustrate a “sequel” to the book, with the same cast of characters. You can provide some prompts, such as “what if the Cat in the Hat went to the moon?”
Make an instrument: Children can make rubber band guitars, toilet paper roll flutes, dollar store tin pan drums and more. Can they write a song about the book as a class?

Determine materials. Create a shopping list of needed materials for your activity, and gather these items. All activity materials should be included, and there should be enough for all children to participate.

Create instructions. Be sure instructions are simple, to the point and age-appropriate!

Assemble your activity kit. In a large bin, place all items necessary to complete the activity. All kits should come with prepared materials and all supplies that will be utilized. For example, pre-cut construction paper shapes for pre-school aged children. Use Ziplock bags to create a set of materials for each child, and shared materials can be loose in the bin. Include copies of kid-friendly instructions for each child, and don’t forget to include the book!

Deliver! Drop your completed kit to United Way Gifts in Kind (680 Murphy Ave. SW, Atlanta, GA 30310) on June 20th between 9AM-12PM. Think of all the fun kids will have at the event, and learning while they go!
